They still don't have any reason whatsoever to expect that the pen in a random guy's hand is any more than a pen.

I beg to differ. Mostly normal people come aboard. Still doesn't excuse, nor give reason to metagame about knowing what the parapen is/does.

Why don't we just remove antags and have every gamemode be extended then?

I don't like using Parapens but their usually the only way to take out a decent target without making a gory bloody mess everywhere.

Although. now that I think about Parapens could simply have less chemicals in them. It would give someone who gets kidnapped, and not just murdered, a chance.

Better plan: more RP objectives "Hold X for X ransom, do not kill".
Because then the parapen becomes an issue, since it causes massive toxins damage after a while.

The parapen, as I understand it, is supposed to be a quick way to incapacitate your target, but it has several drawbacks that keep it balanced. First, it only has two charges, meaning a traitor could only use it that many times before the pen is now useless. Like the Derringer, which does incredible damage, it is limited by its extremely limited ammunition. Secondly, the pen does no damage; that's up to the traitor. This means the bludgeoning/gibbing/spacing must be done subsequently, increasing the traitor's chance of being caught. Third, remember that parrapenning an individual in public instantly points you out as a traitor, without accomplishing a single thing for your objectives. Unlike killing your target outright and dealing with the consequences later, just putting them to sleep for a few minutes doesn't earn you squat. Smart players never stay alone for long, so the parapen's stealth uses are pretty limited.
Overall, the parapen is a weapon for the stealthy opportunist, rather than a run-and-gun approach. If you stalk your prey or catch a lucky break, you can use them effectively. Otherwise, it's only use is a quick get out of combat free card to allow you to escape.

TBH, I feel like they should have a chance to fail on injection. so you have to stab possibly twice. Would give players some kind of chance.

Doesn't the parapen not give any notification, though? Would a failed attempt notify the victim?

How it is is that they can't be wearing armor, similar to a hypospray. So a fully clothed HoS wont be that affected by it as compared to say, a gardener. There's yer flippin nerf

On a side note. the way i see parapen is as the final set up for a kill method that involves traitor or non-traitor weapons. An effective means of kidnapping for them to wake up in a dimly lit makeshift surgery room in nothing but a muzzle and handcuffs. As you saw each other limbs off slowly one by one, or breaking every bone they own as you hear their muffled cries for help, help that will never come.
Or you know... so you can drag them to the gibber... but whatever...

I'm for nerfing the parapen, making it to where it's a slightly higher price, maybe, and to where the affected subject stutters when trying to talk. I remember a round where Catshadow parapenned me, dragged me into the cold room through bar maintenance, and shoved me into the gibber. Would be nice to have a chance when up against the parapen.
